Artist Statement:
To highlight Bangor's part in a rich mythological cycle, I have chosen to depict my vision of Lí Ban or Muirgen. Lí Ban, the daughter of the king of Ulster lived a lonely life under Lough Neagh until she prayed to become half-fish, seeking company amongst the sea creatures. This box depicts her relationship with the fish, and her wish being granted.
300 years later she is caught in a fishing net, and baptised by St Comgall, becoming the mermaid Saint. This part of her life is highlighted by the net atop the box. I wanted to express feelings of togetherness with this design, and focus on the welcoming, communal aspect of our city."
